TVONLINE · 1999 experiment / 2003 venture

Before online video became obvious.

TVONLINE grew from an early internet-video experiment into a web-native television venture with original programming, internet-only distribution and a lean operating model.

1999
The first experiment

A small test changed the direction.

In 1999 I experimented with transmitting an audiovisual program through my personal technology website. At the time, most websites were still built around text and static images. The test suggested something much larger: the internet could become a distribution medium for television-like experiences.

Four years later, that experiment became an organized venture.

November 2003

A television station designed for the web.

TVONLINE was built around its own identity, schedule and original productions — not as a directory of third-party clips and not as a retransmission of conventional channels.

Product

Web-native by design

Original programs, reports and productions were distributed through the internet, combining scheduled programming with on-demand viewing.

Operating model

Lean before “lean” was fashionable

Limited capital forced a disciplined model: small teams, resourceful production, fast decisions and continuous adaptation.

Scale

Audience and team

The venture reached approximately 1.5M reported peak daily audience reach and grew to a network of up to 100 collaborators.

Why it still matters

Not nostalgia. A strategic pattern.

The enduring lesson is not “I worked in streaming early.” It is that technological shifts create business opportunities before markets have a common language for them — and execution under constraints can matter more than budget.

Contemporary Greek press coverage

TVONLINE was covered by major Greek newspapers while it was active, documenting it as an organized internet television operation.

Later

International and educational references

The project later appeared in international retrospectives and teaching materials concerning the evolution of internet television.

The medium changed. The work is still about seeing the shift — then making it executable.

Today I apply that same builder-operator mindset to strategy, digital transformation and product decisions.
